I’m a health care consultant and executive coach with 20 years of experience leading change in health policy and delivery, coaching and facilitating executive conversations, and building programs to improve organizational and individual performance.

Client and Business Focus

My practice focuses on physician leaders who’ve achieved success in their careers, and have moved into a leadership role, or are leading a change initiative or team. I work with physician leaders to develop their individual leadership style and philosophy, based on their unique strengths, to increase their influence and effectiveness as leaders.

Physicians have always led the delivery of health care across settings. The pace of change in health care today – accountable care organizations, medical homes, value-based purchasing, and bundled payments to name a few – requires physician leaders who are experienced in patient care, and can navigate organizational and team dynamics to support care delivery. When compassionate care is delivered by clinicians working as teams and led by physicians, their ability to both heal and alleviate suffering for people at the most difficult moments of their lives increases greatly. There are also a myriad of factors that make that difficult for physicians – some external factors and some internal.

I believe my clients already have the capacity for great leadership and happiness at work, and my role is to partner with them to define what that means for them. I work with clients who are ready to look inward to achieve “breakthroughs” that impact their professional and personal lives.

Background and Experience

My health care career has given me a diversity of experience and perspectives. As a White House health staffer, I advised senior officials on cost, quality, and access issues, and oversaw $200 billion in annual Medicare payments. My work included implementation of Inpatient Hospital Quality Reporting, Medicare Severity DRGS, post-acute care payment reform, redesign of the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) Program, overseeing Medicare Demonstration Programs that preceded ACOs, and serving as the liaison to Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology for Medicare.

I’ve also worked in health care as a consultant supporting health care systems adjusting to change. I helped a safety net physician practice adjust its operations to maintain profitability under new Medicare Advantage capitated plans. I supported an Academic Medical Center and Faculty Plan seeking to balance clinical, academic, and research missions in an era of reduced NIH and Medicare funding. Currently, I support CMS partnerships with State Based Health Care Exchanges providing coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

What’s most meaningful for me is developing and coaching health care leaders to excel in both the “hard skills” and the “soft skills” of leadership and influence leaders. I’ve designed and implemented leadership development programs organizational decision-making, leading quality improvement initiatives, finance, and developing a leadership philosophy.
