Healthcare Peer Coaching Fundamentals™

The Physician Coaching Institute is pleased to offer a coaching skills training foundation course that provides the participant with an immersive experience in peer to peer coaching. This 2-day virtual live training introduces the student to the International Coaching Federation  coaching core competencies which they practice real time with other participants.  The goal of this training is to equip healthcare team members with the skills and confidence to facilitate a peer coaching conversation.  Participants distinguish a coaching conversation from mentoring or advising, and learn to effectively support a peer in creating awareness and developing a forward looking plan.  They learn the difference between coaching, mentoring, and therapy. Completion of this course meets the coach training prerequisite for enrolling in our next tier, the Certified Physician Development Coach™ Pathway to Excellence program.   (Learn more about our healthcare coach training programs.)

Program Curriculum and Structure

The coaching foundation curriculum is comprised of eight core modules encompass Coaching Ethics, Coaching Communication Method, Coaching Session Structure, and  Coaching Concepts that create Client Awareness.  Delivered over 2-days using live video-conferencing technology, this immersive learning experience layers coaching didactic with interactive real time coaching.  Coaching concepts and practice build over two days, with the student developing greater competence and confidence in facilitating a full peer coaching session.   Students learn the Physician Coaching Institute Peer Coaching Framework that is adapted from the International Coaching Federation and which they can reference when conducting peer coaching sessions.  Coaching Reference Guides, live coaching demonstrations,  mentor coach feedback, and coaching audio demos augment the interactive learning.

Eligibility for Participation

This training is appropriate for any member of the healthcare team including physician, nurse, pharmacist, psychologist, or other allied health professional, as well as non-clinical professionals who support the healthcare team, such managers, executives, leaders and consultants.

Clinicians who have found themselves in the position of “informal coach” or those who have always been drawn to human potential development are encouraged to enroll and learn formal coaching method.

All healthcare professional who wants to  support their peers through a non-judgmental coaching approach, applying the ethics and principles of professional coaching, will especially benefit from expanding their communication repertoire to include this valuable skill set.

Coaching Credential and CME Credits

Participants who complete this foundation coach training earn the Healthcare Peer Coaching Practitioner™ designation as well as verification of 15 coach training hours earned (approved by International Coaching Federation). This training  meets the prerequisite for entering our advanced training, the Certified Physician Development Coach™Pathway to Excellence program. (Enrollment in the Certified Physician Development Coach™program requires a separate application and acceptance process.)

The Physician Coaching Institute (PCI) is proud to announce that our Healthcare Peer Coaching Fundamentals™ program has received approval from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) for 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in the category of Prescribed* Credit.

The AAFP has reviewed Healthcare Peer Coaching Fundamentals™, and deemed it acceptable for AAFP credit. Our current term of approval is from 06/02/2024 to 06/02/2025. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

*AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

Training Dates and Tuition

The 2-day training is held on Friday and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 3 PM Pacific Time both days (10:00 AM to 6 PM Eastern Time).  Attendance on both days is required.

Because the training is very much “hands-on” practice, your presence and focus is integral to your own and each group member’s experience of learning how to coach.   You will be assigned specific dyad partners for each of eight coaching activities. If you anticipate conflicts such that you would miss more than 30 minutes of the training on either day, please find a future date when you’ll have no conflicts and can participate fully.

Cancellation and Transfer Policy

  • There is a $100 non-refundable enrollment fee for cancellation more than 30 days prior to the first day of training.
  • For cancellation between 7 and 13 days prior to the training start date, cancellation fee is 25%. For cancellation within 7 days of the start day, cancellation fee is 50%.  For cancellation on or after the start date, cancellation fee is 100%. (Tuition may be eligible for transfer to a future training date by approval of the program director; a transfer fee applies in all cases.)
  • Cancellation and Transfer fee may be waived at the discretion of the Executive Director.
