Expert Overview

As a senior cardiac surgeon and physician leader, I believe coaching is a strength-based process and my methods include developing and enforcing competency in the core values of emotional intelligence and positive psychology. As a seasoned coach to healthcare C-suite executives and physician leaders my ultimate goal is to help you determine how you want to show up and how you can purposefully align with healthcare system values and vision. I will be the compass that influences you in the moment.

Client and Coaching Focus

Dr Chedrawy’s signature coaching program, “Leadership by Design”, focuses on new and seasoned healthcare leaders who are new to a role or transitioning through their leadership path. Dr Chedrawy helps physician leaders not only deal with burnout and develop resilience but also find purpose with the goal of reaching fulfilment in their leadership journey and careers. Dr Chedrawy coaches individual physicians, groups and teams towards physician-hospital alignment and collaborative strategic planning for the purpose of building high-performing healthcare teams.

Background and Experience

In 2010, a hospital CEO, in Chicago, asked me to meet with one of my colleagues. The CEO explained to me that this surgeon was “not doing well”. As a Medical Director and Division Head, in an academic Department of Surgery, I was used to mentoring clinically and dealing with physician staff issues. I approached this physician discreetly and asked his permission for us to sit down and explore any issues he may be struggling with. He enthusiastically agreed. Over the following few months, we discussed the professional and personal matters he was dealing with and how they impacted his life. These were casual, informal and unstructured, once a week, conversations. After 3 months, he thanked me for

listening. His spouse reached out to me, two months later, and said he was doing much better and that I helped him rediscover his “purpose”. I did not realize this was my first experience as a coach.

Later that year, the same CEO asked me to speak to one of my Internal Medicine colleagues. I quickly realized I became the victim of my own success, and I was now the “unofficial coach” for the physician staff. Two years (and five more coached physicians) later we established the “Physician Leadership Council” for this health system. The focus of the group was physician well-being, specifically, physician leaders’ well being.

Since completing training as a Certified Physician Executive in 2017, I have been facilitating and coaching sessions for over 80 physician leaders with the American Association for Physician Leadership. In 2023 I completed coaching training with PCI, Physician Coaching Institute, as a Master Certified Physician Development Coach. The informal and unstructured conversations, over the years, have now evolved into a structured and leadership focused coaching program known as “Leadership by Design©” with coaching clients in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Leadership by Design helps physician leaders, new and experienced, not only deal with burnout and develop resilience techniques but also help them find their purpose and ultimately fulfillment in their whole life, professional and personal.
