Background and Experience

Through my early academic career as a diagnostic dilemma doctor and physician educator, I found my strengths in demystifying the complex and mentoring trainees.  As a training director, I developed leadership skills, some business acumen, developing budgets and creative solutions for ever changing rules and environments.  Setting expectations and holding young pediatricians to be accountable came naturally to me.  Academic advancement came through studying what I was already doing in the educational arena, and I progressed through the ranks to become one of the early educators to get to the rank of full professor. Along the way I bolstered my business and leadership skills through continued course work as a HRSA Scholar, Leaders in Academic Medical Centers at Harvard School of Public Health and wrapped this all up attending the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.  I assumed leadership roles as an educator for the American Academy of Pediatrics, question writer for the Nation Board of Medical Examiners, national leader of pediatric residency directors(APPD), Hospital Pediatrician in Chief, Interim Chair of Pediatrics for Drexel University College of Medicine then switched gears to serve as the Chief Medical Officer serving on the executive team at Akron Children's Hospital system.  In that role I got very interested in provider wellbeing (even before COVID) and along with a psychiatry colleague developed a 501C3 offering free, concierge, confidential mental health services for our respective medical staffs and trainees.  I have benefited from some transformation coaching (indebted to Rob Fazio, PhD) at a few pivotal career inflexions so my eyes were opened to developmental coaching as opposed to corrective action coaching.  With authentic gratitude for my varied and wonderful 40-year career including different practice models and settings, academic advancement, educational leadership, leadership development, people management I have a powerful desire to feed forward to the next group of physician or executive leaders.   Becoming a Master Certified Physician Development Coach seems like the logical next chapter to continue to support my colleagues and the aspiring leaders who will follow.
